Enough with the Roy Halladay talk, the team has plenty of starting pitching, and yes the Phillies could use some help in the starting pitching department, but the upgrade of the Phillies starting pitching is not vital in order for the Phillies to win in 2010.
The bullpen does need serious remodeling if the team expects to make it to its third straight World Series. The Phillies are currently at a stand still in negotiations with the team’s two most consistent relievers in 2009, Scott Eyre and Chan Ho Park. The two bullpen pitchers the Phillies targeted this off-season have signed with other teams, Brandon Lyon went to Houston, J.J. Putz to the White Sox.
At the moment the Phillies are more interested in acquiring perennial CY Young candidate Roy Halladay, but while doing so are neglecting the areas of the team that need the most improvement. Halladay is an All-Star and will certinaly win games for the Phillies, but Halladay is not going to pitch nine strong in all of his starts. Ask the New York Mets what happens when a team has a great starting pitcher and no bull pen.
The fact that Phillies are hesitant to acquire a costly bullpen pitcher does indicate that the Phillies are serious about trading for Roy Halladay, however, if the Phillies miss out on Halladay and lose more bullpen guys to free agency Phillies fans could be in for some nightmare 7th,8th, and 9th innings in 2010.
